I can’t teach my kids without getting all wrapped up gathering all sorts of hands on fun stuff, so when I came across the book A House for Hermit by Eric Carle I couldn’t resist the temptation to buy one. Down to the pet store we went, two hermit crabs and a jar of hermit food. This was the best $20 I spent on entertainment that lasted (or rather lived) for 6 months.
They loved playing with their new pet. My son would take Googly everywhere with him. It would explore his desk while he did his school, he would take it outside and build a rock jungle gym for him to climb on and even sleep with him which resulted in an emergency search party in the morning. They are inexpensive and super easy to care for. You can even use recycled items from around the home. For a crabitat we used a large box and cut down the sides so it was wide and short, but not too short or it will climb out. We used mayonnaise jar lids for food and water dishes and your kids can have fun making things for them to climb on and under. Even though they have a name like “hermit” they are actually very social and like to have fun playing and exploring, so be sure to buy at least two of them. Whether you are planning an ocean unit study or are just looking to surprise your kids, a hermit crab friend is a must! 9/2015 |
