How to Make a Unit Study in 4 Easy Steps!

2/27/2018

Do you want to make a unit study for your child but you don't know where to start? Does the task seem daunting to you? Well, fret not because I have an easy solution for you...follow me on Pinterest! I am always coming up with new unit study topics and pinning many great resources for you to discover. Once you find a topic of interest here is a 4 step guide to help you through the process.

HOW TO MAKE UNIT STUDIES IN 4 EASY STEPS!
Step 1 READ ABOUT IT- Find a good nonfiction book that has lots of real pictures about the topic of your unit study. You could also look for fiction books based on history to add to the reading list. Don't overwhelm your child by picking out too many books.  Stick with one good nonfiction that is full of pictures and information. Then add in a few other books related to the topic. No more than say, 5 books total but 1-3 is better.

Step 2 WRITE ABOUT IT- Create a book about your topic. You could use a spiral notebook, drawing book, or create your own book with construction paper. Fill your book with facts, reports, drawings, and things printed from the internet. For a front cover your child can draw their own picture with a bold title or print out a coloring picture from the internet. As your child reads the book take time to pause when you find an interesting fact and write it down in their book. If you want your child to learn more about something they read, have them do a report.

Step 3 WATCH A VIDEO OR CONDUCT RESEARCH- As your reading and you come across a fun fact, take some time to find a video on YouTube that ties into what you just learned. You could also conduct further research on the internet or in another book on something learned from that lesson too.

Step 4 DO HANDS-ON ACTIVITY OR PROJECT- Find a fun project to do that is related to the topic. This could be a skit, diorama, science experiment, report presentation, field trip, board game, puzzle, or art.

I challenge you to try it for 2 weeks. I bet you will find your child is more engaged in school if you are learning core subjects through a topic that interests them. You can do it!
