What Happens to Your Intent to Homeschool Form?

1/12/2018

Have you ever wondered what happens with your Intent to Homeschool form you fill out each year? I did and it turns out they publish the statistics at your state’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction website. In fact, you can see the statistics all the way back to 1987 when homeschool was on its way to becoming legal.
Since I am from Washington state, I looked up our local homeschool statistics and found the information interesting. Currently, in 2017/18, there are 21,022 registered home-educated students here- I’m pretty sure this only includes ages 8 and up since that’s the required reporting age. I became very curious if this number had grown or decreased over the years. So, I looked up the records all the way back to when I first began homeschooling in 2004 then to the first statistics recorded. It grew significantly from 1987 to 98. Then the numbers dropped a few thousand by the time I began homeschooling in 2004. Over the past 6 years there has been a steady growth of about 1,000 new students each year. The numbers below reflect the number of registered homeschooled students.
2017/18 21,022
2016/17 21,213
2015/16 20,912
2014/15 19,610
2013/14 18,218
2004/05 16,468
1987/98 4,045 to 19,945
If you’re like me, you might be wondering what the statistics are for your state as well or maybe you never knew it was even available and where to find it. Well, now you are informed. Despite the reason for this curiosity, I was happy to find out what happens to the data they collect and found the statistics intriguing.
