Enjoy learning about physical science, math, and engineering concepts with this fun hands-on Lego brick challenge. This is a NO PREP lesson plan, just print and teach!
This lesson was so much fun! My students loved making their boats, seeing if they were buoyant, then sinking them with gold. Adding balloon motors at the end of the lesson was the icing on the cake. My class of k-2nd graders were able to easily blow up their balloons to make their boats move and race in the water.
I brought in a digital kitchen scale so they could learn about pounds and ounces and how to write the abbreviations, It was also a gentle introduction to decimals. I was actually a bit surprised at how much they enjoyed weighing their Lego boats. I have now incorporated it into most of our class lessons. To go a step further, you could even bring in a balance scale to compare the weight of two Lego boat creations. Learning about inches and centimeters has been another fun aspect of this lesson. They easily grasped the concept of measuring how long and how tall their creation was and were able to execute this task quite easily. This lesson plan incorporates S.T.E.M. concepts with physical science, math, and engineering skills. Learning how to write the names of colors, counting their gold, and doing vocabulary copywork create a perfectly balanced lesson plan. This lesson plan is a win win for kids and teachers.
